Jan. 17th Meeting: From the Manhattan Project to Global Warming (CO2 GHG Mitigation Technologies) and Beyond
Venue imgres imgres globwarm_ttl

When: Tuesday, January 17, 2012, 5:30 - 7:30 pm (5:30-6:30 pm: Networking & Buffet Dinner; 6:30-7:30 pm: Presentation)

Speaker: Meyer Steinberg,
is a Research Professional. Formerly, he was Senior Chemical Engineer at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he was Head of the Process Sciences Division of the Department of Applied Science at BNL and also as a Consultant to the Department of Advanced Technology.

Abstract: Some early experiences of a Cooper Union chemical engineer on the Manhattan Project and his latest studies on CO2 Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Technologies will be presented. A description of the activities of the Manhattan Project, and his experience at Oak Ridge and Los Alamos on the project will be offered.

Mitigating the Global Greenhouse effect while maintaining a fossil fuel economy, requires improving efficiency of conversion and utilization of fossil fuels, use of high hydrogen content fossil fuels, decarbonization of fossil fuels and sequestration of carbon and CO2 applied to all energy consuming sectors of the economy including electric power generation, transportation and industrial and domestic heating.

Decarbonization means removal of carbon as C or CO2 either before or after fossil fuel utilization and sequestration means long term disposal of C or CO2. The review will cover the principles of removal and recovery of CO2 from power plant stacks, the oceanographic and geological disposal of CO2 and the conversion of CO2 to gaseous and liquid transportation fuels. The global economic aspects of CO2 mitigation technologies will be touched upon. Introduction to the highly efficient Integrated Plasma Fuel Cell Power Cycle will also be presented.

Bio:
Mr. Steinberg is a graduate and professional Chemical Engineer of the Cooper Union School of Engineering and the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. He worked on the Manhattan District's Atom Bomb Project at Oak Ridge, TN and Los Alamos, NM, and then as a Chemical Engineer in the heavy chemical and metallurgical industry.

At the Brookhaven National Laboratory, since 1957, Meyer performed research in the field of radiation chemical processing and chemonuclear reactors. He is an inventor and developer of concrete polymer materials. His research in nuclear energy includes nuclear waste management and safety, the use of fission and fusion reactors for synthetic carbonaceous fuel production and development of accelerator spallator for nuclear fuel production and transmutation of fission product waste and reduction of nuclear weapons materials. His research in fossil and solar energy involves coal conversion, desulfurization, hydropyrolysis, the conversion of biomass and municipal solid waste to clean fuels and greenhouse gas CO2 mitigation technologies.

Mr. Steinberg formerly was at Brookhaven National Laboratory as a Senior Chemical Engineer, where he was Head of the Process Sciences Division of the Department of Applied Science at BNL and also as a Consultant to the Department of Advanced Technology. He is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

He has over 500 publications and holds 38 patents, and is the co-author of the book "Greenhouse Gas CO2 Mitigation: Science and Technology" (1998)ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1 - a Kindle edition is now available.
