Speaker: Dr. Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic
is the Vice-Chair of Columbia University’s Biomedical Engineering Dept. and the Director of Columbia’s Laboratory for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering.

Bio: Dr. Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic is the Vice-Chair of Columbia University’s Biomedical Engineering Dept. and the Director of Columbia’s Laboratory for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering.

Dr. Vunjak-Novakovic is also the Mikati Foundation Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences at Columbia University, and Co-Director, Craniofacial Regeneration Center, Columbia University. She is also an Honorary Professor, University of Belgrade, Serbia; a Visiting Scientist, MIT; an Associate Director, NIH Resource Center for Tissue Engineering; and, an Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, Tufts University.

Among her many awards and services are the National Academy of Engineering (2012); Continental Chapter Council of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (2011-2014); Clemson award of the Society of Biomaterials (2010); Scientific Advisor, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (2010); and being one of five inducted into the Hall of Fame, Women in Technology International (2008).

Dr. Vunjak-Novakovic's research interests include advanced technologies for functional tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, human stem cell research, and the study of disease. She received her Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from the University of Belgrade, Serbia in 1980, and was a Fulbright Fellow, MIT in 1986-87.
