Refineries - Impact of Hurricanes Harvey & Maria, Flood Vulnerability and Mitigation Techniques, and Digital Technology Changes Coming Down the Pike

Speakers: Richard K. Ladroga, P.E., Director – Energy at DeSimone Consulting Engineers and Leonardo P. Garzon, P.E., Director at DeSimone Consulting Engineers (Southwest, Caribbean, and Latin America).

Abstract: 2017 was the costliest year ever for weather and climate disasters in the United States. The most recent National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimate of the loss is pegged at $306 billion; the previous record year, 2005, saw $215 billion in disasters.

Highlighted by a string of hurricanes that pounded the U.S. Gulf Coast in August, and Florida and Puerto Rico in September, last year saw sixteen weather events that each topped a billion dollars in damage. Some of these events had significant impacts on the energy infrastructure of the United States.

The March presentation will:
  • Highlight the impact of Hurricane Harvey on the Refining Industry in the Gulf Coast

  • Provide some highlights of the effects of Hurricane Maria on the Energy Infrastructure and Chemical processing Industry (CPI) in Puerto Rico

  • Examine some vulnerabilities of the infrastructure, and what some firms are doing to mitigate hurricane effects pre- and post- loss.

  • Touch on Digital Technology examples making their way to the oil patch.
