Feb. 21st Meeting: Competitive (Technical) Intelligence:
Its Place in Technology Development Organizations
Venue
When: Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 5:30 - 7:30 pm (5:30-6:30 pm: Networking & Buffet Dinner; 6:30-7:30 pm: Presentation)
Speaker: Martha R. Matteo, Ph.D., Consultant and Advisory Board member in the field of Competitive Technical Intelligence.
Abstract: Competitive Technical Intelligience (CTI) is a bridge between technology/productivity advances and business decisions. It is both a point of view and a challenging career path in technology-based companies
Dr. Matteo will describe the (a) perspective of CTI, (b) its potential roles in decision support across industries and (c) possible career paths leading to and from (as in career growth) this discipline. Specific cases will be described to illustrate impact on business competitiveness and productivity. As time allows, she will consider applications represented by attendees.
Bio: Dr. Matteo has parlayed an academic/industrial research career into an industrial “decision support” career in Competitive Technical Intelligence (CTI). In this capacity, she “analyzes the relevant external environment, in the context of internal technical issues, for the purpose of timely support of technical and business decisions.” CTI is both a point of view and a career opportunity for technically trained individuals with an interest in business impact.
Dr. Matteo is a Fellow and past President of Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP; www.scip.org), recipient of the Catalyst Award from SCIP, and a Lifetime Achievement award from Frost & Sullivan. She has been involved with CTI since 1988, when she moved from the laboratory to found and help globalize the function at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. Matteo co-chaired two international SCIP meetings on CTI, has authored articles, lectured internationally, and now coaches both practitioners and consultants on CTI value and practice.
Dr. Matteo is also active in the New York Academy of Sciences (www.NYAS.org), where she is a Fellow, former Board member and past chair of the Biochemistry Section/Biochemical Pharmacology Discussion Group. She has a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Brandeis University and was a founding faculty member of the University of Massachusetts/Boston. After an academic career, she transitioned to applied research in industry, first at Union Carbide Corp. and then at Boehringer Ingelheim, Inc., from which she retired in 2006.
Note: Dr. Matteo has a deep appreciation of engineers, being married to one (Biochem/ChemE), a mother of two (Mechanical Engineers), and an active collaborator with many throughout her career.
