Process Safety Engineer

The Process Safety Engineer manages process safety management (PSM) programs as they apply to the basic engineering design of chemical, petrochemical, and refining facilities. This professional also works with project design teams providing guidance and consulting on specific project-related process safeguarding systems design on a day-to-day basis.
Responsibilities include: • Provide oversight, review, and development of PSM policies, procedures, practices, standards and tools
• Participate in project process safety reviews and provide team leadership as required (e.g., HAZOP facilitator)
• Perform process risk analyses as needed to support the design of process safeguarding systems
• Design overpressure protection and relief systems particularly for reactive systems in accordance with DIERS methodology
• Determine the performance requirements of safety instrumented systems in accordance with ISA and IEC standards and client requirements
• Prepare narrative of process safety design considerations for project basic engineering documentation
• Maintain working knowledge of relevant industry PSM regulations, codes, standards, and industry recommended practices
• Train and mentor process design engineers and other engineering disciplines in various PSM areas with emphasis on hazard identification and process safeguarding system design
• Act as a liaison with all offices worldwide and third party detailed engineering contractors to resolve PSM problems on specific projects
Required:
• Minimum of 5 years experience in various areas of process plant design in chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum refining processes
• Minimum of 10 years experience in PSM in the chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum refining industries with emphasis on process safeguarding systems design
• Degree in chemical engineering
• Suitable specialized training in process safeguarding systems design
• Expertise in qualitative hazards identification methods such as HAZOP, FMEA, etc.
• Expertise in quantitative risk assessment including layer of protection analysis, fault tree analysis and consequence modeling
• Expertise in overpressure protection and relief system design including DIERS methods
• Expertise in the design of safety instrumented systems in conformance with ISA and IEC standards including knowledge of pertinent equipment and instrument reliability databases
• Thorough knowledge of safeguarding design-related requirements of PSM regulations, standards, codes and industry recommended practices including OSHA, ASME, API, ISA, IEC, CCPS, NFPA, et
