The AIChE Foundation’s Impact on Our Profession


Speaker: Dr. Peter B. Lederman, Past Chair of the AIChE Foundation’s Board of Trustees

Abstract: Dr. Peter B. Lederman will explain what the Foundation does and how it aims to affect the wider world of Chemical Engineering. He will talk about the activities that the Foundation is funding, how projects are chosen for funding, and current activities

Dr. Lederman is a Past Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, as well as a former Executive Director of the Otto York Center for Environmental Engineering and Science at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. (Full biography below.)

The AIChE Foundation was founded in 1990 as the philanthropic arm of AIChE, and it supports programs that enable AIChE and its members to be a positive force for change through the safe and responsible practice of chemical engineering.

The AIChE Foundation raises funds to support projects and activities that further the AIChE’s mission and enable the profession of chemical engineering to have a greater impact on the world. Its ongoing programs include scholarships and support of activities for students, young professionals, women and minority chemical engineers. It also supports AIChE's most prestigious awards, honoring eminent chemical engineers for career accomplishments, service to society, and service to the institute.

Bio: Dr. Peter B. Lederman has over 50 years of experience in industry, government and academia as an engineer, manager, professor and executive.  Dr. Lederman earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees at the University of Michigan. Pete has over 100 published papers and has spoken to technical and non-technical groups on a wide variety of subjects.  He has testified before Congress and been an expert witness.

Dr. Lederman retired as the Executive Director of the Otto York Center for Environmental Engineering and Science at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he was also a Research Professor of Chemical Engineering and the Executive Director of the Office of Intellectual Property. He continues to teach Environmental Engineering and Policy.

Most recently, he served as Chair of a National Academy of Science Committee on the Evaluation and Review of the Military Chemical Stockpile Disposal Program. He continues to practice as a consulting engineering.

In prior positions, during his professional career, Pete was Director of the U.S. EPA’s Industrial Waste Treatment Research Program; a Senior Vice President of Roy F. Weston, where he was responsible for the hazardous material consulting practice; taught process engineering a the Polytechnic University of New York (now NYU Tandon School of Engineering); was Director of Technical Development at Research-Cottrell; and, a Senior Process Engineer with Esso (now Exxon) Research and Engineering Company.

He is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a Diplomate in Environmental Engineering and a National Associate of the National Academies.

Program Details: The event begins at 5:30 pm with a Networking Event that includes a buffet supper (arriving at 6:00 pm) and with the presentation from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm.  Attire: Professional casual attire is suggested. Please note the meeting room should be available about 5 pm - so early attendance is encouraged.
